About this event
A Kundalini yoga class is a structured spiritual and physical practice that consists of six main parts: tuning in with a mantra, breathwork (pranayama), a set sequence of movements (kriya), deep relaxation, meditation, and a closing song, chant or intention. The class may open with a mantra “Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo" chanted three times or an intention set to center your mind and connect with your inner wisdom. The warm up provides gentle stretches and movements, such as cat-cow or spinal twists, focusing on loosening the lower back and spine. Next unfolds the Kriya, which is a precise sequence of postures, breath, and sound (like the rapid panting of "Breath of Fire") designed for a specific goal, such as stress relief, unblocking the lymphatic system or building core strength. Relaxation is induced as you lie flat on your back to let your body rest and absorb the energy shifts from the kriya. Meditation billows in as a focused mental exercise often using silent or spoken mantras, specific hand positions (mudras), and eye focus. At closing the group sings the traditional "Long Time Sun" song or sets an intention and seals the practice with a long "Sat Nam" (truth is my identity).
