ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • AAA warned that Halloween was the deadliest night for young pedestrians—advising parents to accompany children until at least age 12, use flashlights and reflective gear, and choose face paint over masks. The agency urged drivers to avoid residential shortcuts during peak trick-or-treating hours after 28 alcohol-related crash deaths on last Halloween.  News 12 Hudson Valley

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Zeus Brewing Company—located at 174 Main Street in Poughkeepsie—was named Brewery of the Year in the small brewery category at the Great American Beer Festival held in Denver earlier this month; it also won a gold medal for its fruited sour beer Urban Oasis Raspberry and Lemon Verbena.  Hudson Valley Post
  • Davis Furniture, a 101-year-old company in Poughkeepsie, announced its upcoming move from its Route 9 location (having relocated 15 times in its history). The company said it is actively looking for a new storefront and will update customers when its plans are finalized.  Hudson Valley Post

  • Hudson Valley residents can celebrate Halloween by watching horror movies filmed locally. Destination Dutchess (the county's tourism office) has shared a list that includes films such as A Quiet Place and Smile 2.  Hudson Valley Post

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rising utility bills and cold weather have experts saying that Poughkeepsie residents should check heating systems and make basic home repairs to lower costs. Homeowners are advised to update insulation, change batteries in detectors, and use local utility rebates—steps that may help avoid expensive winter damage.  Poughkeepsie Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Melissa brushed past Bermuda as a Category 1 storm with 90 mph winds and has caused at least 50 deaths in the Caribbean; many New Yorkers feel the emotional toll with relatives in the affected areas and officials warn against scams when donating—relief drives and rescue efforts are continuing.  Hudson Valley Post

  • Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson is investigating why Poughkeepsie's $12 million for replacing lead pipes has not reached local systems — he said funds announced in 2024 remain delayed — with a hearing set for November 20 in Albany.  Mid Hudson News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Blake Butera, who managed the Hudson Valley Renegades from 2018 to 2019, has been named the Washington Nationals manager. At 33, he becomes the youngest MLB skipper since 1972 and the second former Renegades manager hired this week — after Craig Albernaz with the Orioles.  Mid Hudson News
  • Rondout Valley’s senior Owen Shaffer-Sermini won the Mid-Hudson Athletic League boys cross country individual title on Oct. 30 at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome in Milton—beating rivals by up to 25 seconds, while Our Lady of Lourdes captured the team title with 44 points for the second straight year.  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • On Oct. 30 in Milton, New Paltz senior Dylan Friedman won the MHAL girls cross country individual title by finishing the 3.1 mile race in 18 minutes, 5.9 seconds. F.D. Roosevelt won the girls team title with a 46 to 51 score over Rondout—New Paltz finished third with 88 points.  Poughkeepsie Journal
