COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CAREERS and Opengate, two non-profits that help people with disabilities in the Hudson Valley, merged after announcing their plan on Tuesday — pending Attorney General approval, CAREERS will join Opengate on December 1 with all staff transferring and services continuing uninterrupted.  Mid Hudson News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Spirit Halloween store at 1895 South Road in Poughkeepsie will become Spirit Christmas in early November — the store will offer Christmas merchandise and join one other upstate location in Amherst.  Times Union
  • The Hudson Valley Future Summit will take place on November 19 at SUNY New Paltz from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom, featuring panel discussions and a keynote by Luke Tilley. Attendees must register by November 18.  1450 WKIP
  • A New York federal judge ruled in favor of online publishers including the owner of the Poughkeepsie Journal in an antitrust suit against Google—finding that Google used its ad placement tools to boost revenue unfairly. The decision builds on key evidence from a government trial and may lead publishers to gain more control over their ad earnings.  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • A new owner is under contract to buy Alto Music on Route 9 in Wappingers and will transform the building into an adult medical day care that will serve about 33 clients daily. The project awaits approval from the Town of Wappinger Planning Board — and the store remains open to customers.  Hudson Valley Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is urging deer hunters to donate processed venison from legally harvested deer—collected through a free program with Feeding New York State—to local food pantries to help families facing uncertain SNAP benefits as deer season begins on November 15th. Hunters can bring their tagged deer to participating processors at no cost.  Hudson Valley Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hormel Foods recalled nearly five million pounds of chicken products—metal from a conveyor belt was found—and the USDA advised hotels, restaurants and food distributors to discard affected items—no injuries were reported.  Hudson Valley Post
  • Columbia Memorial Health in Hudson is planning to cut its hospital beds by 87 percent to become a critical access hospital — the move will lower the count from 192 to 25 for medical and surgical patients with no layoffs planned though some staff may be reassigned. The union representing workers criticized the plan and a town hall meeting on November 1 at 4 p.m. will invite community input.  1450 WKIP

SPORTS NEWS

  • YES Network parted ways with longtime Yankees analyst John Flaherty + a Hudson Valley native who broadcast baseball for 20 years after joining the network in 2006 following his 14-year playing career. The move is part of a broader shakeup as YES streamlines its coverage and Flaherty said he now looks forward to exploring new opportunities beyond baseball.  Daily Voice
