  • Zeus Brewing in Poughkeepsie won a Gold medal for its Urban Oasis ale at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver and was named Brewer of the Year for small breweries—on Monday the brewery released its new Zeus Dark Ale during the Commander in Cheers event celebrating America’s 250th birthday.  1450 WKIP

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Retail analysts report that prices for Halloween items in Poughkeepsie are up 10—15% compared to last year—animated figures now run from $100 to $300 while hanging decorations cost $35 to $50. Grocery prices have risen 3% and soda has nearly doubled since 2018, prompting experts to advise shoppers to buy store-brand candy and plan ahead.  News 12 Hudson Valley

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hudson Valley residents are warned this winter to avoid entering caves and mines from November through April to protect hibernating bats, including the endangered Northern long-eared bat+. State officials note that even a brief visit can stress bats and accelerate White-nose syndrome, and those who enter these sites may face prosecution+.  Hudson Valley Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Hochul signed a law allowing farmers markets to operate in state parks to boost access to fresh produce and support local farms. Legislators hope the law will help address food insecurity and improve community health—markets may appear in parks as early as next spring.  Times Union
  • The New York State Bridge Authority is fixing a billing error that affected 8,000 E-ZPass commuter plan users on October 9 and 10—refunds are being issued and customers should call E-ZPass customer service for help.  1450 WKIP
  • Firefighters at West Point have worked over three weeks without pay due to the federal shutdown and are owed about 10,000 hours of wages while they protect cadets, officers and nearby communities. The union says the firefighters will keep working and urges lawmakers—asking them to restore pay for affected employees.  Daily Voice

  • After Dark and Hammered on the Hudson will host Poughkeepsie's first Halloween pub crawl this Saturday, Nov. 1 from noon to 6 p.m. — the event will visit five popular bars including The Derby, Schatzi's Pub and Bier Garden, Dutch Crown, The River Cafe and Mahoney's and offer a free welcome drink, spooky drink specials and over $1,000 in costume prizes.  Hudson Valley Post
