  • American Legion Post 429 in Rhinebeck is asking for help to rebuild its historic hall after a fire damaged the building on Sept. 8 and its insurance claim was denied — the fundraiser has raised $10,500 toward a $25,000 goal as it works to reopen the canteen and ballroom for local veterans and community groups.  Daily Voice

  • Spirit Christmas will open a holiday store soon at The Shoppes at South Road in Poughkeepsie, and customers can book Santa photos starting Nov. 21 — the brand plans to open 30 stores across the Northeast and Great Lakes regions.  Poughkeepsie Journal

  • Beacon writer Erin Somers will release her second novel The Ten Year Affair on Oct.21— the book tells a ten-year story of intertwined families and an affair set in a small Hudson Valley town. Somers uses her own move from Brooklyn to Beacon to show how people look for meaning in everyday life.  Times Union

  • After a school crossing guard died when he was struck by a car near Smith Elementary School, Assemblyman Jacobson urged the district to let all students ride the bus instead of just those living more than a half-mile away—while the district said it will work with state agencies to improve safety on busy roads.  Mid Hudson News

  • Firefighters traveled to Albany on Tuesday to honor former Chelsea Fire Department Chief Robert Van Tassel, who died on October 30, 2022, along with 125 other fallen firefighters at the 28th Annual New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony. Governor Hochul issued proclamations naming Oct. 7 as Firefighter Appreciation Day & the week of Oct. 6 to Oct. 10 as Fire Prevention Week in New York State.  Mid Hudson News
  • The Dutchess County Board of Elections is seeking poll inspectors for Election Day on Nov. 4—applicants must be registered voters 18 or older who complete a paid training session and work from 5 a.m. to about 9:30 p.m. for $300.  Poughkeepsie Journal
