COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ iHeartRadio Hudson Valley and Dutchess Outreach launched the annual Susan DeKeukelaere Memorial Coat Drive on Oct 1—residents may donate clean, new or gently used coats for adults and children until Oct 31 at drop-off sites including Chase Bank on Main Street and local libraries. 1450 WKIP
- ➤ Local fire departments in the Hudson Valley will hold fall fundraisers to raise money and teach fire safety via events including Washingtonville's car show and Port Ewen's penny social on October 5, Brewster's open house on October 20, and Gardiner's craft fair on October 18 — community members can enjoy food, music, and family activities. A two-alarm fire earlier damaged buildings at Lakeshore Preserve Apartments in Port Ewen — officials worked to contain the blaze and investigate its cause. WRRV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ New York State launched the Get Offline, Get Outside campaign to help parents guide children in completing 50 outdoor challenges that build skills and offer fun experiences—ranging from hiking and camping to stargazing and sandcastle building. Hudson Valley Post
- ➤ Applications for New York State tuition assistance are open for the next school year for students at state colleges who live in New York and must meet income and grade requirements. Applicants must complete the FAFSA to be eligible for financial aid. News 12 Hudson Valley
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a statewide burn ban that began Oct. 2 and will remain in effect until Oct. 15 — it prohibits most outdoor fires including brush burning, debris disposal, campfires and open cooking fires amid rising fire risks from dry conditions. State officials said they will reassess fire risks before Oct. 15 to decide if the ban will be extended. Daily Voice
- ➤ Governor Kathy Hochul criticized federal cuts that slashed New York’s homeland security funding by $187 million—an 86% drop—saying the loss endangers law enforcement training, equipment, and bomb squad readiness. She warned that without these funds, cities like Poughkeepsie may face rising security risks. Hudson Valley Post

- ➤ Tim Sohn organized the 4th annual Showing Up: Perspectives on Cancer In-Person Event at the Holy Mountain Franciscan Retreat Center in Garrison for patients, survivors and supporters to share their stories in a safe space.
