ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A Poughkeepsie crossing guard, James Montanino, was fatally struck by a vehicle outside Smith Elementary School on Sept 29—city officials and the school district responded by boosting patrols and signage to improve safety. Poughkeepsie Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Old school rock bands from the 80s Hudson Valley scene will unite on October 5th at a private event in Wappingers Falls—organized by Karen Kampfer Catalano of Locks That Rock Hair Design—to celebrate their legacy and honor friends lost in the music community. WRRV
- ➤ This month, stargazers in the Capital Region and Hudson Valley will see Saturn near a nearly full moon on Oct. 5 and a supermoon on Oct. 6 while three meteor showers and two bright comets will light up the sky. Clear nights will offer the best views though a bright moon on Oct. 8 may hide some meteor streaks—astronomers call these events a rare treat for locals. Times Union
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal judges allowed the decommissioning of the Indian Point power plant today, a decision that may let Holtec discharge radioactive wastewater into the Hudson River. Local officials warn that this could reverse cleanup progress—dolphins and other wildlife that returned may soon face new dangers. Hudson Valley Post
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal workers—those not in essential roles—were furloughed when Congress did not pass a funding bill Tuesday night, starting a government shutdown today. Many services, including travel and passport processing, will slow as agencies work without pay. Hudson Valley Post
- ➤ Dutchess County's 2024 audited financial report shows strong fiscal management with a $104 million unassigned fund balance and a $31.6 million surplus from federal funding and state aid—county officials said this reduces pressure on local taxpayers. Leaders also reported that over $3.6 million from the Community Benefit Fund has been committed to critical local projects. Mid Hudson News
- ➤ A July update from the state comptroller detailed eight corrective actions for the City's IDA from 2022—five fully implemented, one partially completed and one still unaddressed. The IDA accepted the OSC update on Sept 24—officials plan to work on project approvals and tracking issues. Poughkeepsie Journal

- ➤ On Sept. 26, a 67-year-old man went into cardiac arrest at his Lakeview Drive home in Carmel and was revived by police and first responders using CPR and an AED shock — he is now in stable condition after suffering a heart attack. Daily Voice

- ➤ Fourth grader Mario Vilardi of Hopewell Junction won the Drive, Chip and Putt regional qualifier in New Jersey — he will head to the Augusta National finals scheduled for the Sunday before the Masters in April. News 12 Hudson Valley
