ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hudson Valley leaders criticized a federal ruling that allowed Holtec International to move forward with decommissioning the Indian Point plant—raising concerns that the decision could let radioactive wastewater enter the Hudson River and harm local water quality.  Hudson Valley Post
  • New York's fall foliage report shows the season nearing peak color change as bright colors spread across the state (Poughkeepsie is expected to see a 10% transition with yellow and brown leaves by the weekend).  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • After a warm September weekend, a cold front will move through next Monday night and bring cooler fall weather to our region—highs will drop to the lower to mid-60s on Wednesday. Tropical systems in the Atlantic may affect later forecasts, but high pressure will keep most rain away.  Times Union

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York State mailed inflation refund checks to over 8.2 million residents using 2023 tax data+ the one-time payments to offset rising sales taxes will continue to be delivered into October and November.  1450 WKIP
  • The Protect Our Power Coalition opposes a plan to transfer Central Hudson Gas and Electric to state control—group members warn that this move may lead to higher bills and reliability issues that could undermine local financial support.  1450 WKIP

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Fishkill Correctional Facility, a mysterious illness that began last week caused one inmate to show signs of intoxication and four officers to feel sick; the inmate was examined, later needed additional care, and three officers received Narcan and were taken to a hospital. The area was evacuated and DOCCS along with a K-9 unit are investigating the outbreak.  Mid Hudson News
