COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Cortlandt Manor protested on Thursday against reopening the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan, saying the move could be too risky and harm local safety. Holtec International said it may restart the 2,000-megawatt plant if state and federal leaders agree—this plan would cost $10 billion and might allow radioactive water to flow into the Hudson.  News 12 Hudson Valley

EDUCATION NEWS

  • DCC welcomed SUNY Vice Chancellor for Community Colleges Valerie P. Dent on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at its Fishkill and Poughkeepsie campuses—she was joined by Denise Zieske and Jeff Lowther as she toured the Mechatronics Lab and observed expanded advising and mental health supports funded by SUNY. The visit confirmed plans to expand workforce programming at Fishkill—demonstrating the college’s commitment to training students for in-demand careers.  Mid Hudson News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Pat Ryan held a news conference at Garnet Medical Center in Town of Wallkill to warn that proposed Medicaid cuts will soon leave thousands without coverage in the Hudson Valley—he urged voters to act to protect healthcare access.  Mid Hudson News
  • On Sept 24, a federal judge ruled that New York's law banning radioactive water dumping into the Hudson was preempted by federal rules — a decision that allows Holtec to release treated water from the Indian Point plant. The ruling may speed up the plant's decommissioning while environmental groups oppose the move.  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • New 'super-express' Metro-North trains will begin on Oct. 6 and cut trips from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central to under 90 minutes, with Gov. Kathy Hochul announcing the schedule on Sept. 23—officials say enhanced signaling and scheduling made the change possible.  Daily Voice
  • New York State Police Sergeant Nigel Barnett from Poughkeepsie died in a motorcycle crash on Sept. 16 and was honored at a Sept. 25 funeral attended by hundreds of law enforcement officers and state leaders—Gov. Hochul ordered flags to be lowered in his honor. Donations raised during the service may help his son pay for college.  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • Area state lawmakers proposed creating a Hudson Valley Power Authority to take over Central Hudson, and a coalition of business, labor—joined by Central Hudson leadership—has voiced strong opposition citing risks to service, jobs, and community upgrades. The group warned that a government run utility will lead to poorer investment and increased local debt as the debate continues.  Mid Hudson News
  • Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers announced a new Downtown Business Improvement District to revitalize Main Street + tackle challenges with housing, homelessness, and empty storefronts, following a strategic plan approved by the state. Beacon Mayor Lee Kyriacou detailed plans to rebuild his city's underground infrastructure and build 264 homes—with 10% set as affordable workforce housing—as his city grows.  Mid Hudson News
  • The City of Poughkeepsie was awarded $10 million in March for a Downtown Revitalization Initiative and will begin developing a Strategic Investment Plan with up to $300,000 in planning funds—residents can share their ideas through a survey.  Hudson Valley Post
