COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The CPCA One Too Many 5K will take place from September 19th to September 21st as a virtual and in-person race to fight child abuse. Local groups including Arlington Professional Firefighters and Town of Poughkeepsie PBA will compete in a Battle of the Badges on September 20th and join a scenic walk/run at Long Dock Park on September 21st.  1450 WKIP
  • Market 32 and Price Chopper are running a pet food drive from September 15 to October 4 where customers can buy $10 bags of five food items to support local animal shelters—helping pets and families in need get the care they deserve.  1450 WKIP
  • Nonprofit HONOR said on September 16th that nearly 958 people were without shelter in Orange County, with children making up half of this group and numbers nearly doubling in two years. The report noted rising housing costs and full shelters are making it hard for families to secure stable housing — a trend affecting local communities.  News 12 Hudson Valley

  • Netflix's Next Gen Chef is premiering today with host Olivia Culpo and Culinary Institute alumni Kelsey Barnard Clark and Carlton McCoy as judges—filmed on a campus in the Hudson Valley with students, faculty, and a film crew. The series features 21 young chefs competing for a $500,000 prize and marks a full-circle moment for the alumni returning to their alma mater.  Poughkeepsie Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New York gas prices remain unchanged from last week with regular fuel at an average of $3.16 per gallon on Monday according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration — prices have ranged from $3.00 to $3.23 over the past year while the national average is slightly higher.  Poughkeepsie Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies found the largest algal bloom in 40 years on Sept. 12 between Kingston and Norrie Point in Staatsburg—this toxic Microcystis bacteria can harm pets and people if they come in contact with it.  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • Officials reported that a large toxic algae bloom was found along the Hudson River near Kingston—and scientists observed that fish such as striped bass are showing unusual behaviors and reduced spawning. Researchers warn that rising water temperatures and unknown factors may be affecting the fish, prompting concern about the river’s ecological balance.  Hudson Valley Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Twenty-two new police recruits began a five-day-a-week training program Monday at the Zone 14 Dutchess County Law Enforcement Academy—training will run until graduation on February 26 as local officials, including Sheriff Kirk Imperati, shared insights on community policing and mental health awareness. The class features recruits from Poughkeepsie police along with several other local law enforcement departments.  Mid Hudson News
  • New York Attorney General Letitia James proposed rules that will require social media companies to limit addictive algorithm driven feeds for users under 18 and block notifications from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. without parental consent under the SAFE for Kids Act. The rules are open for public comment until Dec. 1 + will take effect 180 days after finalization and require companies to verify age and obtain parental consent.  Daily Voice
  • New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s approval numbers rose and she held a double-digit lead over Elise Stefanik as a Siena College poll released on September 16 showed. Voters called her hardworking and decisive—helping her surpass 50 percent statewide support while fewer saw crime as worsening.  Daily Voice
  • The City of Poughkeepsie and two residents filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Dutchess County and County Executive Sue Serino to stop a planned homeless shelter on Oakley St, alleging the plan violates the Fair Housing Act — worsening segregation and harming property values. City leaders say the suit aims to block the county’s decision and to recover legal fees as it contradicts previous housing agreements for single women and families.  Poughkeepsie Journal
