EDUCATION NEWS

  • State officials launched the Literacy Trail on Aug.28 at Taconic State Park, pairing 10 state parks with free children’s books to promote healthy outdoor play—families can also access the books through local libraries if they are not near a featured park.  Times Union
  • Poughkeepsie City School District announced a new bus tracking initiative using the BusRight app to help families monitor routes and receive notifications for students from prekindergarten through grade five living more than half a mile from school—families may choose not to use the app while still receiving bus service. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The town will hold a public hearing on September 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall on an amendment to let Vassar College site a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Manchester Road and nearby wetlands—residents will share their opinions before the Town Board votes amid concerns over past battery fires.  Mid Hudson News
  • DPW workers installed removable speed bumps near schools last week to slow cars around Poughkeepsie, including on Mansion Street in front of Sojourner Truth Elementary School (Morse Elementary), near the creek, and on Garden Street. Early observations showed some drivers crossed into oncoming lanes to avoid the barely noticeable bumps, and city officials say they will share more details about the traffic safety plan soon.  Mid Hudson News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction on the Admiral Halsey apartments addition at 135 Main Street slowed recently—black tar-like material surfaced from the ground and contractors used an 18-wheel tanker truck to remove it while the project adds 36 units along North Perry Street.  Mid Hudson News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Five local girls’ soccer teams – John Jay-East Fishkill, Monroe-Woodbury, Mount Academy, Our Lady of Lourdes-Poughkeepsie and Washingtonville – will compete in the NYSSCOGS Hall of Fame tournament at sites in the Albany area starting Friday, Sept. 5 and ending Sunday, Sept. 7; sixty-six teams from across the state will take part in the three-day event.  Mid Hudson News
