- ➤ Volunteers, vendors and staff prepared the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck on August 13th for the 179th Dutchess County Fair, which will run from August 19th to 24th. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ New York Attorney General Letitia James released body-worn camera footage from June 5 showing Poughkeepsie police responded to a 911 call about an assault with a sword at a house on Fair Oaks Drive where officers repeatedly commanded suspect Brian Czornyj, 36, who was in a mental health crisis, to drop his weapon before Officer Gouger fired a fatal shot — his image was blurred in the footage to protect his identity. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The State Public Service Commission reached a multi-million dollar settlement with Central Hudson after a 2023 explosion in Wappingers Falls injured 15 people and destroyed a block of homes — the utility admitted it did not provide safe service and agreed to pay a $5 million penalty while setting up a fund to improve gas safety. Mid Hudson News
- ➤ The New York State Bridge Authority announced that it will begin a $34.4 million rehabilitation project on the Poughkeepsie side of the Mid-Hudson Bridge this fall and continue work through summer until 2027. Michels Construction Inc. won the low bid and will improve safety, road quality and drivability while keeping traffic changes minimal. Poughkeepsie Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A new report from New York State shows that 16 rural counties, including parts of the Hudson Valley, have an alarming shortage of healthcare staff with only 4 primary care doctors per 10,000 people and few pediatricians or obstetricians available. Comptroller DiNapoli said some rural hospitals are at immediate risk of closing—urgent action is needed to protect access to care. Hudson Valley Post
- ➤ Employees at MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie said they saw roaches, mice, and sewer bugs in patient rooms, hallways, and the cafeteria – photos and videos show these pests and staffing shortages that left trash for over 24 hours worsened the issue. - ➤ The FDA announced a nationwide recall of soaps sold in New York that may cause life-threatening infections due to contamination with Burkholderia cepacia—this recall includes products like DermaKleen and KleenFoam and warns people with weakened immune systems of increased risk.
