ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The NTSB report found that underinflated tires and lack of seatbelt use led a charter bus to roll down a ravine on I-84 near Wawayanda on Sept. 21 — killing two chaperones and seriously injuring the driver and 14 high school passengers while one student with a seatbelt had only minor injuries.  Times Union

CRIME NEWS

  • State police arrested Jamal Maher, 20, of Highland and two men from Yonkers—Mahamed Ali, 21, and Tareq Ali, 20—after a 31-year-old man was found injured with his face and hands zip-tied following a kidnapping and assault at Ambassador Cigar Shop on State Route 55 on July 24.  News 12 Hudson Valley

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A thick haze from Canadian wildfire smoke made the air hazardous on Saturday, and although winds cleared Sunday, light northerly breezes brought the smoke back on Monday — local officials warn residents with young children and breathing issues to take precautions — as it is expected to remain until at least Thursday.  Hudson Valley Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today marks the start of a new state law that requires private employers to offer pregnant workers at least 20 hours of paid leave per year for prenatal care — the rule applies only to the pregnant employee. The law covers time for exams, treatments, tests and other care needed for a healthy pregnancy.  WPDH
  • Poughkeepsie has resumed evening and weekend arraignments in city court after a pause caused by court officer shortages. The court now uses the Common Council chambers for security — allowing law enforcement to reduce travel and improve efficiency.  1450 WKIP
  • At the start of the New Year, a law went into effect that requires all private-sector employers to grant pregnant employees 20 hours of paid leave for prenatal appointments—this benefit applies only to the pregnant individual and is one of several new state laws enacted to support New Yorkers.  WRRV

  • Today through Wednesday, heat warnings predict temperatures will feel like 95 to 105 degrees—residents are urged to take breaks indoors and drink extra water. Spotty thunderstorms may occur Wednesday afternoon, and cooler weather will follow Thursday—bringing a welcome change.  News 12 Hudson Valley
