  • A grassroots group called New York Neighbors Unit formed in the Hudson Valley to support 23-year-old Gerson Santamaria Turcios after ICE detained him late Friday in Rhinebeck, where he had been returning from work. US District Judge Ronnie Abrams signed a writ of habeas corpus on Monday, and the group raised nearly $40,000 + donations from actors Paul Rudd + Griffin Dunne.  Mid Hudson News

CRIME NEWS

  • Gunfire erupted just after 7 p.m. Sunday at Hulme Park on Market Street during a crowded basketball game in Poughkeepsie — a 37 year old man from Newburgh suffered a non life threatening gunshot wound as two men were arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, police said.  News 12 Hudson Valley

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dutchess County received nearly $2 million in federal funds to support 19 housing and infrastructure projects that will improve sidewalks, accessible housing, and services for vulnerable residents—County Executive Sue Serino said the grant dollars came from the Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership Program.  Poughkeepsie Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health insurers in New York requested a 13.5% rate hike for ACA plans next year which may raise costs for about 1 million policyholders—small group plans could climb by 24%. The state Department of Financial Services will review the proposals in late August—rising hospital fees, high drug prices and new benefits are pushing up costs.  Poughkeepsie Journal
