Good morning, Poughkeepsie. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of July.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Metro-North president Justin Vonashek said that a study is underway for a rail spur from Stewart International Airport to Salisbury Mills on the Port Jervis line. Orange County representative Jim O’Donnell said the plan could help the airport—although such ideas have been studied for 15 or 20 years.  Mid Hudson News
  • New York State announced that its first-ever inflation refund checks will be mailed to over 8 million qualifying taxpayers — some checks may be as high as $400. The checks will begin shipping in mid—October with delivery times varying by mail.  Hudson Valley Post
  • A Turn to Tara investigation found that New York lost 1,400 full-time corrections jobs in the past year, placing it among the top five states for steep staffing cuts since 2020 — New Jersey experienced a similar decline while Connecticut improved its numbers. The steep job losses have raised concerns that understaffed prisons may become less safe for both inmates and guards.  News 12 Hudson Valley

HEALTH NEWS

  • Family Services Inc. in Poughkeepsie is set to offer mental health services for children as young as three in the coming weeks—an expansion supported by a $250,000 state grant—through a partnership with Dutchess County and its Department of Mental Health.  Mid Hudson News
  • Walmart is recalling about 850,000 Ozark Trail water bottles after their lids reportedly eject with enough force to cause serious injuries — including cases of permanent vision loss. Consumers are advised to stop using these bottles immediately and return them to Walmart for a refund.  Hudson Valley Post
