CRIME NEWS

  • Luc LeBlanc, a Canadian trucker, was arraigned last week in Ulster County after being extradited for charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in connection with a 2020 crash that killed a 47-year-old mother, a 14-year-old, and a 10-year-old — he is accused of driving his tractor-trailer erratically — according to the district attorney.  News 12 Hudson Valley

EDUCATION NEWS

  • This month brings prom season for local high school students who are capturing memories at formal dances—photo galleries show events in Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, John Jay and Middletown.  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • Dutchess Community College hosted the SUNY Reconnect Tour on June 16 to launch a tuition-free program for adults in high-demand fields—drawing SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. and local leaders. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York joined a nationwide $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family to address their role in the opioid crisis. The settlement will give New York up to $250 million for opioid abatement over 15 years and requires the release of more than 30 million documents—ending the Sacklers' control over Purdue.  1450 WKIP
  • The City of Poughkeepsie Police PBA held its biennial awards dinner on June 16—where officers on the 4 p.m. to midnight shift were honored for confiscating illegal guns from suspects and saving lives. In 2023, officers seized 58 guns and in 2024, they recovered 55 illegal firearms, according to Police Chief Rich Wilson.  Mid Hudson News
