CRIME NEWS

  • Brian Czornyj—a 36-year-old man with a history of mental health issues who attacked family members and a crisis worker with a sword—was shot dead by Town of Poughkeepsie Police on Thursday, and his actions led Dutchess County officials to upgrade security measures for legislative meetings.  Mid Hudson News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dutchess BOCES held its Distinguished Graduate Recognition Breakfast on June 6th in Wappingers Falls, where two Franklin D. Roosevelt High School students were honored for overcoming challenges and showing leadership—Liz Angel-Ojeda will study elementary education at SUNY Oneonta and Edgar Quinonez will study business at SUNY Albany—reflecting their impact on the school community.  Mid Hudson News

  • Mohonk Preserve announced that peregrine falcon chicks have hatched on Millbrook and Bonticou cliffs near New Paltz — climbers must respect the temporary closures to protect the young birds. The chicks are 16 to 23 days old — they will likely start learning to fly around 40 days old.  Hudson Valley Post
  • Smoke from Canadian wildfires lowered air quality across upstate New York Sunday as many areas reached 'unhealthy for sensitive groups' levels—readings in the Adirondacks hit 150. State officials said changing winds may clear the Capital Region by Monday morning.  Times Union

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Poughkeepsie's Common Council has enacted a law that bans cooking on streets and sidewalks without a permit, ending the blockage by large barbeque grills along Main Street. The law lets officials issue tickets and fines ranging from $250—$1,000 per offense but allows cooking in approved park areas and during sanctioned events.  Mid Hudson News
  • Lieutenant Paul Bucher retired from the Poughkeepsie Fire Department after 20 years of service and has moved with his wife and children to Florida for a retirement near Disney—he organized key community events such as Thanksgiving meals and the Santa Run that supported local families. Colleagues expressed their sadness at his departure as he said he would miss the close-knit spirit at the station.  Mid Hudson News
