  • US Army Air Forces Staff Sergeant Eugene Darrigan, who died when the B-24 Bomber Heaven Can Wait was shot down near Hansa Bay on March 11, 1944, was buried with military honors in his hometown of Wappingers Falls on May 24.  Mid Hudson News
  • The Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan (CFOS) said the 10th Annual Hudson Valley Gives raised over $1 million during a 24-hour online event that began Wednesday, with 6,000 donors and 266 organizations supporting local causes. The event has now helped raise nearly $5.5 million in total for nonprofits in the region.  Mid Hudson News

  • On Saturday morning a boat explosion on the Hudson River claimed the life of a 59-year-old man working near a flame (10:30 a.m.), and authorities are investigating the cause of the blast.  News 12 Hudson Valley

CRIME NEWS

  • A woman drove her car through a Poughkeepsie barbershop on Saturday night at the intersection of Washington Street and Orchard Place—she said she swerved to avoid another vehicle though witnesses reported she hit the shop—and she was arrested for DUI after failing a field sobriety test.  Mid Hudson News
  • On May 19, Dutchess County Drug Task Force agents arrested Alfonso Perez, a 29-year-old alleged drug dealer involved in cocaine and fentanyl sales in Southern Dutchess, during a search of his Dugan Lane home in Wappinger—agents seized cocaine, Xanax pills, and other evidence, and he was held without bail after his arraignment.  Mid Hudson News
  • A 61-year-old Kingston man was arrested in Red Hook on May 21 on charges of robbery, grand larceny, menacing and attempted criminal mischief for allegedly robbing a parking lot at Stewart’s Shop near 7558 North Broadway at about 7:20 a.m.—he later robbed another victim near West Market Street and Route 9.  Mid Hudson News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marist held its first commencement ceremony as Marist University on Saturday when over 1,200 graduates from 33 states and 15 countries braved intermittent rain to earn their diplomas—NBC News correspondent Steve Kornacki delivered the keynote, received an honorary doctorate, and urged them to show common humanity. Ninety-four percent of the graduates already are employed or enrolled in graduate school.  Mid Hudson News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During National EMS Week this week, Dutchess County's EMS Council held its annual awards ceremony in Poughkeepsie to honor dedicated EMS providers—including nine 9-1-1 Public Safety Dispatchers—for their calm and professional assistance during emergencies. In 2024, the 9-1-1 Center answered nearly 210,000 calls and dispatched help to over 118,000 incidents—figures that underscore the critical role of local public safety.  Mid Hudson News
  • The Dutchess County Transit Hub in Poughkeepsie sees heavy use as bus riders and others gather at shelters and benches for various activities, including drinking and resting. County staff cleaned the hub on Friday morning using a pressure washer—removing waste and hazardous fluids to keep the area safe.  Mid Hudson News
