COMMUNITY NEWS

  • US Army Air Forces Staff Sergeant Eugene Darrigan’s remains were returned to Dutchess County on May 23 after being recovered from a World War II Pacific crash and later identified through dental and DNA tests. New York State Police and the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office welcomed him home, and his funeral Mass is today at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s R.C. Church — interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Daily Voice

  • Our Lady of Lourdes High School held its Class of 2025 graduation ceremony on May 22 in Poughkeepsie—graduates tossed their caps and received diplomas as teachers and family members celebrated the milestone.  Poughkeepsie Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dutchess County has expanded its Owner-Occupied Property Rehabilitation Program so that all income-eligible homeowners can receive up to $40,000 for essential repairs to major home systems—repairs include fixing furnaces, plumbing, roofs, electrical systems, and accessibility improvements. Homeowners can apply online or by contacting the Department of Planning & Development.  1450 WKIP
  • Assemblyman Matt Slater contacted Governor Kathy Hochul and DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez after a crash on May 14 killed four and left one critically injured on the Taconic State Parkway in New Castle. He urged a review of a decade of crash data and an assessment of safety features—such as guardrails, signage, and rumble strips—to help prevent future tragedies.  Mid Hudson News
  • On Thursday night, hundreds of residents and business leaders gathered at Warring Elementary School to oppose a proposed homeless shelter on Oakley Street in the Fifth Ward, with Mayor Flowers’ video and local leaders questioning county Executive Serino’s plan to use a $13 million state grant for tents and temporary housing. Legislator Randall Johnson warned of legal action if the original agreement to serve families and single women is not honored—officials said the County Legislature meeting on June 6 will decide next steps—while community members signed a petition to keep the shelter limited.  Mid Hudson News
