CRIME NEWS

  • The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office warned Hudson Valley residents today about scammers using AI to mimic its caller ID—impersonating officers and falsely claiming warrants for missed jury duty—to trick victims into paying fines via Western Union, MoneyGram or a prepaid debit card.  Hudson Valley Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dutchess Community College held its 66th commencement on May 16 at the Majed J. Nesheiwat Convention Center in Poughkeepsie—868 graduates received associate degrees and certificates in 46 programs. An Honors Convocation earlier recognized about 250 students with scholarships totaling approximately $315,000.  Dutchess Community College

  • The Poughkeepsie Fire Department is testing the hydrant system this week—residents may see discolored water. Officials say the water is safe—run taps until clear and delay white laundry for 24 to 48 hours after testing in your area.  News 12 Hudson Valley
  • Dutchess Comptroller Dan Aymar-Blair released an audit of Cooperative Extension that found the agency received $2.6 million between 2021 and 2023 but reported profit deficits in 2022 and 2023—creating financial strain.   • The FDA recalled nearly 5,000 cases of 15-ounce baked beans sold in New York because they may contain undeclared soy that can trigger severe allergic reactions. Vietti Food Group from Nashville recalled 4,515 cases, and consumers are urged to return the cans (identified by the lot code Best if Used By Feb 17, 2028) for a full refund.  Hudson Valley Post
  • The Greater New York Hospital Association warned that federal cuts may soon strip health coverage from over 1 million New Yorkers—putting hospitals at risk of losing billions in funds if Congress does not remove the proposals from the reconciliation bill.  Hudson Valley Post
  • Columbia Memorial Health in Hudson has received a $5 million grant from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation’s Nursing Initiative program to support nursing excellence and enhance patient care—grant funds will be awarded over five years to pursue Magnet recognition or Pathway to Excellence status and expand its nursing residency program.  Mid Hudson News
