  • John S. Burke Catholic High School Interact Club donated food, cozy blankets, and toys to Pets Alive in Middletown—one of the area's oldest no-kill animal shelters—as part of a service project near the end of the school year. The student-led organization, sponsored by the local Rotary Club, provided the supplies to help support the shelter's ongoing efforts.  WPDH

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Super Kennedy Chicken & Burger opened on May 15th in a long-vacant building at 522 Main Street in Poughkeepsie and now serves a full halal menu (including fried chicken and wings). The restaurant is near other fast-food spots (a block from a Kennedy Fried Chicken and a few blocks from a Crown Fried Chicken) and faces new local competition.  Hudson Valley Post
  • Walgreens said in the fall that it will close about 1,200 stores over three years, with 500 closures planned for 2025. The Middletown store will permanently close on Wednesday, May 21—details are posted on the website.  Daily Voice

  • Local train rides revive Hudson Valley history as restored railroads from Arkville to Kingston offer scenic trips for riders—bringing new life to old tracks. The Tri-State Railway Preservation Museum opens its museum car at 86 Pike Street in Port Jervis this week—showcasing historic artifacts like the Erie Turntable.  WPDH

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Four bears that had been cared for at the regional wildlife center were released last week into the woods of the Hudson Valley—one known as Pumpkin Thief after a video showed him stealing a pumpkin. DEC biologists helped move the bears to their release site and the center plans to release additional bears soon.  Hudson Valley Post
