EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pawling school bus driver Alan Barto was named the 22nd Dutchess County School Bus Driver of the Year by County Executive Sue Serino. He has driven buses for 14 years with no preventable collisions—earning him a commemorative plaque for his dedication.  Mid Hudson News

FINANCE NEWS

  • The U.S. Department of Education will resume collecting defaulted student loan payments on May 5—payments had been paused since March 2020 due to the pandemic. Borrowers should check their email soon for details on avoiding penalties such as paycheck deductions or debt collector referrals.  Hudson Valley Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longtime resident Europa McGovern was named Poughkeepsie's first development commissioner to oversee City Hall departments as the city works to improve affordable housing and update aging infrastructure. State Sen. James Skoufis and other lawmakers sent a letter asking state officials to address potential issues in Hudson Valley bridges—concerns raised by an NTSB report—hoping to prevent another tragedy.  News 12 Hudson Valley

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Dutchess County Health Department inspected 42 food establishments in April and found that 18 had no violations while five had critical violations that must be corrected immediately—23 had unresolved issues from previous inspections.  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • The FDA announced a Class I recall for the MO-CHA brand Premium Non-Dairy Creamer—made by Momo Tea Inc.—because undeclared milk poses a serious risk to people with milk allergies. The product, made in China and sold in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, involves about 4,500 cases that should not be used.  Hudson Valley Post
