ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officer Justin Brown died in a motorcycle accident on Apr. 13 while commuting to work near Fishkill Correctional Facility; a celebration of life is scheduled for Friday, Apr. 24 at Copeland-Hammerl Funeral Home in New Paltz to honor his service.  Hudson Valley Post

BUSINESS NEWS

  • IBM unveiled plans this week for a 511,000 sqft quantum computing facility at its campus, which involves demolishing two existing buildings (161,000 sqft) to add about 200 jobs; the planning board approved a coordinated environmental review with an updated submission planned for May.  Mid Hudson News
  • Five Below is moving into the former Jo-Ann Fabric store near Marshalls and Homegoods in Poughkeepsie, and the retailer has begun hiring — the official opening date is yet to be announced.  Hudson Valley Post
  • New Yorkers who used credit or debit cards at Trader Joe’s between March and July 2019 may get an estimated $102.45 each after the store settled for $7.4 million over 10-digit receipts. Shoppers must file claims by June 9, and a court hearing will finalize the deal (Aug. 10).  WPDH

CULTURE NEWS

  • The sloop Clearwater begins summer sailing on the Hudson River from Kingston this weekend for an abbreviated season that will end mid-to-late July (15-year hull rebuild underway). The boat will return in spring to complete its restoration.  Mid Hudson News
  • Beacon developers have proposed The Howl, a dedicated karaoke venue at 1154 North Avenue, to open once it gets city approval. The new space will offer private suites, a performance stage and a lounge for daytime family events and adult evenings while using soundproofing measures to control noise.  Hudson Valley Post
  • Dutchess County launched its Rev 250 initiative with the Sgt. Chirp Dispatch app on April 13 — an animated cricket that teaches local history. It hosts RevCon at the FDR Library on June 13 and a Revolutionary Cider Experience at Fishkill Farms on June 27 to mark the milestone.  Mid Hudson News

  • New York banned credit checks for most job applicants starting today. The law, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul, prevents employers from using credit history for hiring, firing, or promotion decisions — except for positions in law enforcement, security, or roles handling large sums of money.  WRRV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rachel Handler, an amputee filmmaker based in Beacon, is editing her documentary How Much Am I Worth? — and working with state senators to challenge the insurance rule that limits prosthetic coverage to one device per limb per lifetime.   • Health officials in Hudson Valley warn residents after rabies was detected in a raccoon + deer in Columbia County. A vaccination clinic is set for Tuesday, Apr. 21, and anyone bitten or scratched should wash the area and seek immediate care.  Hudson Valley Post

  • Realtor.com data showed Dutchess County home sales reached a median price of $469,000 in January, up 3% from December and 20.8% from January 2025; recorded sales rose from 38 to 100 homes, reflecting strong local market growth.  Poughkeepsie Journal

  • Local runners from Dutchess County will compete in the 130th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 20. Participants include Edwin Chong (50) and Zandy Mangold (52), among others, bringing local talent to one of the nation’s biggest racing events.  Poughkeepsie Journal
