  • The Kiwanis Club announced 22 winners in the fourth annual Children's Poster Contest on April 11, 2025 — local children showcased artwork featuring police officers on display on the top floor parking deck at the train station.  News 12 Hudson Valley

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A lithium-ion battery power bank charging a cellphone sparked a fire in a Vassar College dorm room on April 11th—causing heavy smoke and flames on the second floor and injuring one person who was treated at the scene.  News 12 Hudson Valley

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 9, 2025, the Hudson Valley man Orlando Williams, 55, was convicted of attempted murder, kidnapping, strangulation and other charges for his March 14, 2024 attack on his ex-girlfriend—she was smoking on her back deck when he grabbed her, dragged her to a wooded area and tried to stab her, and her boyfriend called 911 to help her escape with minor injuries—Williams now remains in jail awaiting sentencing in June.  Daily Voice

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study from Siena College Research Institute and the Benjamin Center for Public Policy Initiatives at SUNY New Paltz found that 60% of households in the Hudson Valley are living paycheck to paycheck—79% of respondents are stressed by rising living costs. The survey of over 1,500 residents in Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties highlights deep financial struggles in the region.  Hudson Valley Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York lawmakers approved a $2.4 billion budget extender to keep the state government running through Tuesday (April 15th) after stalled negotiations over non-budget items delayed the full budget. Lawmakers will return next week to work on the $252 billion budget while Governor Hochul insists on changes to criminal justice and other policies before signing the final plan.  1450 WKIP
  • Dutchess County Legislature Chairman Will Truitt held a forum in Poughkeepsie on Wednesday to discuss a proposed law that would require background checks for businesses serving children following the arrest of martial arts instructor Tyler LeClerc—whose case also revealed his father's past sex crime. Lawmakers and local parents offered ideas such as a mandated reporter system and recommendations for businesses to post signs confirming completed checks.  Mid Hudson News
