COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region has launched its 2026 Diaper Drive with a goal of collecting 100,000 diapers to help local families. Diaper Distribution Day will be held on July 15 and donations can be dropped off at sites including the Poughkeepsie office.  Mid Hudson News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Shake Shack will open Tuesday, March 24 at Hudson Heritage Plaza in Poughkeepsie, offering giveaways and donating $1 for each sandwich to the Regional Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, and the first customers will receive custom tote bags while enjoying classic burgers+fries daily from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.  1450 WKIP
  • Red Robin (known for its bottomless fries and kids menu) will close 27 more locations nationwide to streamline operations; one of the city's 14 New York branches, including the Poughkeepsie site, remains under review with closure dates yet to be set.  Hudson Valley Post

CRIME NEWS

  • Governor Hochul confirmed that law enforcement in Orange and Nassau counties seized over 28,000 pounds of illegal vape products from Ecto World (a Buffalo-area distributor) destined for the Hudson Valley.  Hudson Valley Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kingston-based nonprofit HUDSY launched 250 Acts of Positive Change to highlight local good deeds in the mid-Hudson Valley for America’s 250th anniversary. The project accepts submissions through its website+shares digital videos throughout the year+prepares a documentary for release by year-end.  Poughkeepsie Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • New York lawmakers have introduced the New York Health Act to create a state-run health plan (covering doctor visits, dental, vision, and long-term care without premiums or copays) for all residents. The proposal is under review and may shift the insurance system for everyone.  Hudson Valley Post

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Marist basketball standout Rik Smits, known for leading the team to consecutive NCAA tournaments nearly 40 years ago, is set to be inducted into the inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame this fall at the university he visits each year.  Mid Hudson News
