  • The Kent Fire Department celebrated its 55th annual installation dinner Saturday at Hilton DoubleTree Banquet Hall in Poughkeepsie — new chiefs and several awards were presented during the event. County Executive Kevin Byrne administered oaths and noted his long-standing connection with Chief Frowd.  Mid Hudson News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New York’s statewide burn ban on residential brush burning starts today and runs until May 14 to lower wildfire risks, state officials said. Residents can still use small backyard fire pits and cooking fires (only using approved wood) while following safety rules.  Poughkeepsie Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • County residents who rely on private wells can apply for free PFAS testing as part of a pilot program launched by the New York State Department of Health this week. Those with contaminant levels above the state standard may qualify for rebates to offset water treatment costs.  Mid Hudson News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Voting is now open for the Poughkeepsie Journal Girls Top Postseason Performer to honor local athletes from basketball, track, gymnastics and wrestling. Coaches must submit game stats by the end of this week and polls close at 8:30 p.m. Sunday before the winner is announced.  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • Army women's basketball accepted a berth in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament late Sunday; the full bracket will be announced Monday and first-round games are scheduled between March 19-21. Coach Katie Kuester led the team to a 24-7 record in the Patriot League.  Poughkeepsie Journal
  • The Poughkeepsie Journal has launched its Boys Top Postseason Performer poll with FDR swimming’s Troy Speare leading at 46% for performances from March 2-8 — coaches can submit game stats before Sunday 8:30 p.m. for next week’s announcement.  Poughkeepsie Journal
