COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mid-Hudson Valley residents will spring forward at 2 a.m. on March 8 as daylight saving time begins. In Poughkeepsie, sunrise shifts to about 7:19 a.m. and sunset to roughly 6:54 p.m. while a Sunrise Stroll at Walkway Over the Hudson is planned for March 20.  Poughkeepsie Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Benjamin Center study at SUNY New Paltz found one in 10 local households had utility service cut for unpaid bills, with Sullivan County at 15 percent. The study also showed 24 to 35 percent of households have utility debt and cut back on spending + travel.  Mid Hudson News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Skywatchers in Poughkeepsie and across the region will see a total lunar eclipse early Tuesday, Mar. 3, as the full Moon takes on a red glow. NASA states totality will begin at 6:04 a.m. and last nearly an hour (no special equipment is needed).  Daily Voice
  • Officials urge residents to immediately kill Asian longhorned beetles spotted near homes during National Invasive Species Awareness Week. The pest damages hardwood trees and is under federal quarantine so residents should call 631-288-1751 if they see one.  Hudson Valley Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison (a retired police officer) lashed out Tuesday at Mayor Mamdani for downplaying a Monday snowball fight at Washington Square Park in Manhattan that injured NYPD officers, saying the remark disrespected those risking their lives on duty.  WRRV

  • New York supermarkets are recalling food items after customers reported metal and glass fragments; Aldi is recalling Bremer meatballs (best-by Oct. 30) and Trader Joe’s is recalling chicken fried rice from Ajinomoto, with consumers urged to return the products for refunds.   • A new StorageCafe report finds the Hudson Valley is the sixth-best spot nationwide to retire because of good healthcare, low crime and affordable living. The area including Kiryas Joel, Poughkeepsie and Newburgh shows seniors that they can age well close to home.  WRRV
