- ➤ At the 35th Annual Catharine Street MLK Jr. Breakfast held Friday, Jan. 23 at the Regency ballroom in the DoubleTree by Hilton, more than 150 community and youth honorees were celebrated with awards while guest speaker Bernard Tarver shared guiding principles for building local inclusivity. - ➤ A Hopewell Junction hiker who attempted to climb four Catskill peaks was rescued last week after sending an SOS at 2:27 a.m. from Fisherman’s Path along the Neversink River (he developed hypothermia after falling in) as icy road conditions delayed rescue efforts. Times Union
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Fox’s new comedy-drama Best Medicine, filmed entirely in the Hudson Valley, has pulled 10.8 million viewers since its early January premiere — marking Fox’s top debut streaming number in nearly three years. Hudson Valley Post
- ➤ Bannerman Castle received a $27,450 grant from the Environmental Protection Fund to restore The Grotto and improve visitor access at Wee Bay. The upgrades will prepare the island for its upcoming tour season when warmer weather returns. Hudson Valley Post
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Municipalities across the Capital Region and Hudson Valley will receive $24.7 million in state water quality grants to repair aging infrastructure and improve flood resiliency. The funds will support 19 projects and form part of a $265 million statewide effort (including upgrades in Catskill, Newburgh and Albany). Times Union

- ➤ Gov. Hochul declared a State of Emergency on Friday, Jan. 23 at Latham as extreme cold and a heavy winter storm, expected late Saturday night through Monday, threaten the region; officials have deployed resources and delayed NYC special election early voting + urge residents to limit travel. - ➤ Poughkeepsie declared a Snow Emergency (in effect from Sunday at 12 a.m.) as a winter storm approaches; the order bans parking on marked roads after Saturday at 11:59 p.m., offers free municipal parking, and shifts Monday’s trash pickup to Tuesday. Poughkeepsie Journal
- ➤ Dollar Tree will pay nearly 560K in fines after New York investigators found it continued selling recalled lead-contaminated applesauce pouches marketed for children. The retailer must improve its recall process to prevent future sales, according to the Attorney General’s Office (announced Friday, Jan. 23). Daily Voice

- ➤ Spring + Mulberry expanded its recall of chocolate bars after finding Salmonella in additional lots made on the same line as Mint Leaf bars, recalled on Jan. 12; customers who bought the bars online or in select stores since Sept. 15 should not eat them and can request refunds.
